狐假虎威 The Fox Borrowing the Tiger's Power

从前，一只老虎在林子里抓住了一只狐狸。 Long ago, a tiger caught a fox in the forest.

狐狸说：你不能吃我，天帝派我来做百兽之王。 The fox said, “You cannot eat me. The Emperor of Heaven sent me to be the king of all beasts.”

狐狸又说：你不信，就跟在我后面走一走。 The fox added, “If you do not believe me, follow behind me and see.”

狐狸走在前面，老虎跟在后面。 The fox walked in front, and the tiger followed behind.

路上的动物一看见，全都吓跑了。 When the animals along the path saw them, they all ran away in fright.

老虎以为大家真的怕狐狸。 The tiger thought everyone was truly afraid of the fox.

其实它们怕的不是狐狸，是它后面的老虎。 Actually, they were not afraid of the fox, but of the tiger behind it.

有人借别人的权势吓唬人。 Some people borrow another person's power to frighten others.

自己没有本事，只会说「我认识谁谁谁」，这就是狐假虎威。 If you have no ability of your own and only say, “I know so-and-so,” that is 狐假虎威.
